Process of Rhinoplasty surgery
Most rhinoplasty operations are performed under general anesthesia although in some cases, when only cartilage is involved the use of local anesthesia is sufficient. During rhinoplasty the surgeon injects a solution into the interior and the exterior surfaces of the nose in order to cause the blood vessels to constrict, reducing swelling and the likelihood of excessive bleeding. This solution also has anesthetic properties helping to reduce post-operative pain. Rhinoplasty became recently popular mainly in the male population.
Primary Rhinoplasty (those who have not had previous nose surgeries or trauma to the nose) is achieved through reshaping, resizing, or augmentation of existing nasal structures. The incisions which are made inside the nose about one centimetre from the nostrils give the surgeon access to the cartilaginous and bony framework that is reshaped by removing the excess bone or cartilage present. If the results are not optimal, there is a possibility to readjust the nose again, this called Rhinoplasty revision, because during this procedure complete Rhinoplasty is not performed, rather it is revising, correcting the errors of the previous operation.
After rhinoplasty
Following surgery a splint is placed on the nose for about a week. If there is some bleeding, a light dressing is placed inside the nostrils for a few hours. Some swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes can be expected that usually clears up in 7 days.
