The nose is the central part of our faces so having a badly shaped our disproportionate nose can be a big drawback and very uncomforting. For improve and enhance the appearance of the nose there is also a surgical treatment, and given that the nose is so visible, it is not surprise that this operation is one of the most requested in plastic surgery.
Commonly known as a nose job, rhinoplasty frequently tops the list of the most requested cosmetic procedure. There are differences between medical rhinoplasty, which needed because of problems related to breathing and cosmetic ones which mainly aims to reshape the appearance of the nose, creating a better facial impression. While at medical rhinoplasty the main goal to cure breathing problems, cosmetic interventions focus on the look of the nose. There are several opportunities from changing the width of the nose to removing the lumps from the bridge of the nose. Patients should consult the surgeon about the expectations.
The purpose of rhinoplasty is to improve the general appearance of the nose relative to other facial features. Some patients are unhappy because of a curvature in the axis of their nose (essentially a crooked nose) other patients dislike the appearance of their nose because of trauma.
Process of Rhinoplasty surgery
Most rhinoplasty operations are performed under general anesthesia although in some cases, when only cartilage is involved the use of local anesthesia is sufficient. During rhinoplasty the surgeon injects a solution into the interior and the exterior surfaces of the nose in order to cause the blood vessels to constrict, reducing swelling and the likelihood of excessive bleeding. This solution also has anesthetic properties helping to reduce post-operative pain. Rhinoplasty became recently popular mainly in the male population.
Primary Rhinoplasty (those who have not had previous nose surgeries or trauma to the nose) is achieved through reshaping, resizing, or augmentation of existing nasal structures. The incisions which are made inside the nose about one centimetre from the nostrils give the surgeon access to the cartilaginous and bony framework that is reshaped by removing the excess bone or cartilage present. If the results are not optimal, there is a possibility to readjust the nose again, this called Rhinoplasty revision, because during this procedure complete Rhinoplasty is not performed, rather it is revising, correcting the errors of the previous operation.
Following surgery a splint is placed on the nose for about a week. If there is some bleeding, a light dressing is placed inside the nostrils for a few hours. Some swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes can be expected that usually clears up in 7 days.
